You can send a message by clicking or tapping the blue speech bubble next to a member’s mini-profile in search results, or through their profile or your Matches tab. There is no way to unsend or recall a Message once it’s sent.
Sounding negative, judgmental, or whiny can quickly turn off a potential match. Avoid cliches, and don’t rush to get your point across.
1. Sending a first message
After you’ve swiped right and matched with someone on Match, the next step is sending them a message. It’s a nerve-racking task that can either make or break your chances of getting a date.
Aim for a first message that shows you actually read their profile and is interesting to them. It’s a good idea to talk about something that they have posted on their profile like a hobby, work or recent travels. This will give you a lot to talk about and a conversation starter.
Don’t be afraid to try a playful opening line or even a gif. Men are often more open to trying humorous or light-hearted messages, but remember to be respectful and don’t use sexist language. You can see and reply to a match’s messages by clicking on their mini-profile or profile under your Matches tab. You can also access your messages by logging into your Match website or app and clicking on the Messages icon at the top of the page.
2. Follow up messages
Match has made it very easy for members to view their messages, whether they are using the website or app. The inbox can be accessed by clicking on the blue speech bubble icon, which appears throughout the site and on the likes page. You can also find the inbox by accessing your profile and going to the message center tab.
If she doesn’t respond to your first message, try sending her a quick follow up text to see if she is interested in continuing the conversation. Keep in mind, however, that you should avoid over-texting her. This will come across as desperate and unauthentic.
If you want to meet your match in person, you can do so through the Date Check-In feature. This is a safety measure that allows you to provide your date’s contact information to three trusted friends, who can confirm that your meeting is safe and legitimate. It’s important to use this feature, as Match has been caught in a romance scam scandal before.
3. Keeping the conversation going
If you’ve been on a dating site for a while, you probably know how frustrating it can be to communicate with someone and the conversation stalls out. This can happen if you aren’t giving your match enough information or your questions are too revealing.
You can keep the conversation going by asking your match to share more about themselves in their profile. This will give them something to respond to and it will also show that you are interested in getting to know them.
You can also ask them about their favorite food or a restaurant they love to go to. This will be sure to make them smile and it can also be a good way to find out their culinary preferences.
4. Sending a wink
In the era of blind dates, ghosting and “I’m just looking for a hookup” messages, it can feel like finding real love is impossible. But match(opens in new tab) wants you to know that real love is out there, and it’s just a click away.
Sending a wink lets your match know that you’re interested, and it could lead to them sending you a message back or even emailing you! If you have a good relationship with your match, you can also use this as an opportunity to ask them out on a date.
Match allows you to wink as many times as you want, but it costs money to email. So if someone winks you and doesn’t write you back, they’re probably not really interested. But it’s worth a shot! Try mentioning something about their profile or photos in your message, or using a cute GIF to grab their attention. Just be sure to never wink at a woman without messaging them first.
